What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a collaboration between therapist and client, a professional partnership. Nobody can be hypnotized unless they want to be. Whilst in hypnosis, nobody can make you do anything which you do not want to do. Hypnosis is not a state of deep sleep - It does involve the induction of a trance but when in it, the client is actually in a heightened state of awareness, focusing on what is happening on the inside, as well as the therapist’s voice. In this state, the conscious mind is suppressed and the unconscious mind exposed. The therapist is able to suggest ideas, concepts and lifestyle adaptations to the client, the seeds of which become firmly planted within the unconscious mind. This practice of promoting healing and positive development is known as hypnotherapy.Hypnotherapy aims to alter patterns of behaviour within the mind, enabling irrational fears, phobias, negative thoughts and suppressed emotions to be overcome.
How does it work?
Hypnosis works by altering our state of consciousness in such a way that the analytical part of the brain is bypassed, making the non-analytical part more alert. The conscious control of the mind is inhibited, and the unconscious mind becomes exposed. Since the unconscious mind is a more instinctive force than the conscious mind, this is the part which the therapist focuses on to elicit change in a client's behaviour. For example, a patient who wants to overcome a fear of flying may try everything they consciously can to overcome their fear, but will almost certainly always fail as long as their unconscious mind retains their irrational fear and prevents the client from succeeding. Progress will be made far more readily be reprogramming the unconscious mind so that deep-seated, irrational beliefs are removed or altered.
